Howling Wolves

A Tribute to Bobby Weir ft. Grahame Lesh & Friends

Live Stream Production

A couple days before the public memorial for Bobby Weir held in San Francisco on January 17, a musical tribute was pulled together at the historic Warfield. Titled “Howling Wolves, A Tribute to Bobby Weir”, the music was helmed by Grahame Lesh & Friends and included an all-star cast of musicians who played with Weir across many different bands.

With less than 48 hours’ notice, Chime Interactive’s Jon Luini got the call from Nugs to produce the video and livestream of what turned into a four-hour musical celebration of the life of Bobby Weir. It was a somber livestream bookend, as Jon also produced the first livestream Bob Weir (& Mickey Hart) ever did back in 1999, at a special event for the launch of The Other Ones album (see archive here). Mark Karan and Dave Ellis, members of The Other Ones were also there in 1999, and also up on stage this night for the tribute.

Thanks to the professionalism and calm experience of our production team, and especially The Warfield’s Jon Garrett, Michael Wilson on Front of House audio, and Nugs, the show rolled off without a hitch and allowed fans worldwide to join the sold-out crowd in a joyous musical sendoff to the beloved Weir.

Most of the artists and fans came to the show following the public memorial earlier that day at the Civic Center, creating a shared space for remembrance and connection.

We were thankful to Nugs to be entrusted to shepherd this through. The majority of the artists and crew were people we’ve worked with over the past decades which gave the evening a real family warmth that suited the context.

All proceeds from the event benefited the Furthur Foundation, founded by Bobby 35 years ago to support good causes in the Bay Area and around the world.

The show opened with an instrumental version of one of Weir’s signature songs, “Cassidy.” This was followed by “Playing In The Band,” sung by Grahame Lesh, “Estimated Prophet,” led by Jason Crosby, and “The Other One.” Ramblin’ Jack Elliott made an appearance, performing Jimmie Rodgers’ “Waiting For A Train.” Reed Mathis played “Black-Throated Wind,” and Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz joined for “New Minglewood Blues.” Grahame closed the set with a rendition of “The Music Never Stopped.”

The second set kicked off with “Jack Straw,” featuring special guest Jackie Greene. Other highlights included “Terrapin Station,” along with reprises of “The Other One” and “Playing In The Band.” “Truckin’” wrapped the set. The encore brought the full ensemble back for Bobby’s American Beauty classic “Sugar Magnolia,” followed by “Sunshine Daydream.”

The show wrapped just shy of 2 a.m. with a beautiful, crowd-led chant and clap of “Not Fade Away,” mirroring the same communal moment that closed the memorial earlier in the day at the Civic Center. It was a powerful reminder of how music can create space for grief, connection, and healing.
